Aaron Donald NFL Return Rumors Grow After Rams Land Myles Garrett

The possibility of an Aaron Donald comeback is suddenly back in the spotlight following the Los Angeles Rams’ blockbuster move for star pass rusher Myles Garrett.

After years of speculation surrounding whether the future Hall of Famer might ever return to the field, a major roster shake-up in Los Angeles has reignited the conversation. While no official plans are in place, the idea of Donald joining forces with Garrett has become one of the NFL’s most intriguing offseason storylines.

Rams’ Myles Garrett Trade Sparks New Speculation

The Rams confirmed Monday that they have reached an agreement to acquire Garrett from the Cleveland Browns, instantly strengthening an already competitive roster.

Not long after news of the trade broke, former Rams defensive star Aaron Donald reportedly acknowledged the move caught his attention.

According to Pat McAfee, Donald responded to the trade news by saying the deal “for sure got me thinking.”

That brief comment was enough to send NFL fans and analysts into overdrive, wondering whether one of the greatest defensive players of his era could be tempted out of retirement.

Financial Hurdles Stand In The Way

While the idea sounds exciting on paper, there are significant obstacles.

Speaking Tuesday, NFL insider Adam Schefter explained that the Rams have already committed substantial financial resources elsewhere, making another major move difficult.

“Again, we could talk about this, and I brought up the idea to the Rams yesterday, and they said right now, they’ve spent all their money. They’ve allocated it to Trent McDuffie, who became the highest paid cornerback in football. Myles Garrett is being paid on a four year, $160 million contract that he’s going to rework to more favorable terms for the Rams, but they’re paying an awful lot of money. Another team called and asked me yesterday, could the Rams sign Aaron Donald? And I said, ‘They’re out of money.’ And he said, ‘In this league, you can always find money.’ And it reminded me of what the teams said when they were calling me in late March, when they said, the Browns are trading Myles Garrett, and the Browns said, we’re not trading Myles Garrett. Teams say the Rams might now make a run at Aaron Donald.”

Despite the financial realities, Schefter stopped short of completely dismissing the possibility. As NFL history has repeatedly shown, teams often find creative ways to create salary-cap flexibility when elite talent becomes available.

Donald’s Relationship With Rams Remains Strong

Another factor fueling speculation is Donald’s continued connection to the organization.

NFL analyst Peter Schrager suggested the former Defensive Player of the Year never drifted far from the game, even after stepping away.

“The dreams for Aaron Donald was to take a step away from football, and truly, they thought, or he thought, there was gonna be this Hollywood career of where he could be, like, The Rock or something in the superhero spectrum. I don’t know if that’s happened, but he has remained in shape and football shape, and is still very much in contact with that team. The relationship that McVay has with Aaron Donald is really strong and talks often with Aaron Donald and his wife, Erica, and there is a very strong bond there still. I don’t think it’s that crazy of a communication after they bring in Myles Garrett.”

Those comments highlight why rumors have gained traction so quickly. Donald’s ties to head coach Sean McVay and the franchise remain intact, making communication between both sides far from unusual.

Can Aaron Donald Still Perform At An Elite Level?

Even if Donald were interested in returning, questions remain about what version of the star defender would take the field.

When he retired following the 2023 season, he was still performing at an exceptionally high level. Donald recorded eight sacks and 16 tackles for loss while earning another Pro Bowl selection and an eighth All-Pro honor.

However, time waits for no athlete.

Donald turned 35 last month and has spent two seasons away from NFL competition. Returning to peak form after such an absence would be a massive challenge, even for a player of his caliber.

Former tight end Rob Gronkowski provides a useful comparison. After returning from retirement, he remained productive and contributed significantly, but he was no longer the dominant force seen during his prime years.

A Dream Pairing For Rams Fans

The thought of Donald and Garrett lining up on the same defensive front is enough to excite any football fan.

Both players have defined an era of defensive excellence and have consistently ranked among the NFL’s most disruptive forces. Together, they could create one of the most intimidating pass-rushing combinations the league has seen in years.

Still, excitement and reality are often different things.

The Rams would undoubtedly explore the opportunity if Donald seriously expressed interest in returning. Yet expectations would need to be tempered. While he could still provide tremendous value, expecting him to immediately replicate his prime years would be unrealistic.

For now, the speculation remains just that. But thanks to Garrett’s arrival in Los Angeles, the possibility of an Aaron Donald comeback suddenly feels a little less impossible.
