Australia held their nerve in a dramatic finish to defeat Bangladesh by seven runs in the second T20I at Chattogram, sealing the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.
The visitors posted a challenging 196/5 before watching Bangladesh launch a fierce chase that threatened to take the contest away from them. At one stage, the hosts appeared firmly in control after a blistering start, but Australia’s bowlers delivered under pressure in the middle and death overs to complete a memorable comeback victory.
Matt Renshaw played a pivotal role with both bat and ball, earning Player of the Match honors after helping Australia recover from a difficult position and contributing to the squeeze that ultimately turned the game.
Bangladesh’s Explosive Start Put Australia Under Pressure
Chasing 197, Bangladesh came out firing.
The opening pair raced to 48 runs in just 19 deliveries, immediately putting Australia on the back foot. Even after Tanzid’s dismissal, Soumya Sarkar continued the assault, while Saif Hassan and Parvez Hossain Emon stitched together a threatening partnership that kept the required rate well within reach.
At the halfway mark, Bangladesh looked capable of pulling off a remarkable chase.
However, momentum shifted when Australia struck in consecutive overs to remove two set batters. Those breakthroughs changed the complexion of the match and gave the visitors a way back into the contest.
Australian Bowlers Turn The Match Around
Australia’s fightback was built on disciplined bowling and smart field placements.
Adam Zampa removed Soumya Sarkar at a crucial stage, while Aaron Hardie and Joel Davies chipped away at the middle order. Nathan Ellis then produced one of the defining spells of the match, dismissing Shamim Hossain and conceding very little when Bangladesh desperately needed boundaries.
The pressure steadily mounted as wickets fell and the asking rate climbed.
Towhid Hridoy attempted to keep Bangladesh alive with a late counterattack, striking valuable boundaries and sixes in the closing overs, but Australia consistently found ways to stay ahead.
Hardie Finishes The Job
Needing 23 runs from the final over, Bangladesh still had hope thanks to Hridoy’s aggressive hitting.
Aaron Hardie was handed the responsibility of defending the target. Although Hridoy launched a six and a four to keep the crowd interested, the Australian all-rounder had the final say.
On the last ball of the innings, Hridoy’s attempt to clear the boundary found Tim David in the deep, ending Bangladesh’s chase at 189/6 and confirming a seven-run Australian victory.
Marsh Delighted After Series Victory

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh praised his team’s resilience after wrapping up the series with a game remaining.
“It’s been great. Obviously, really keen to win this series and to wrap it up after two games is really pleasing for our side.”
Reflecting on Australia’s previous struggles in Bangladesh, Marsh added:
“Yeah, I think it was 4-1 last time and the one win we had was very, very lucky. So, it’s obviously nice to win, but one more game to go for us.”
The skipper was particularly pleased with the batting partnership that helped build Australia’s total.
“Yeah, the wicket today was obviously a lot better, but, really happy for (Matt) Renshaw, especially that partnership with TD (Tim David) was fantastic. The way they sort of got us out of a reasonably tricky position and then, went through the gears and got us to a really competitive total.”
Marsh also highlighted the contribution of his bowlers.
“(Hardie) He was good. It’s always nice when those ones come off, but I think all the bowlers, the way they sort of worked through their sequences and stayed calm under pressure, especially towards the back end.”
“Nathan Ellis with the last two overs was really game changing for us and we’re lucky to have guys like him with his experience in the group.”
“So, yeah, wrapped for the team and it’s nice to get a series win over here.”
Looking ahead to the final match, Marsh said:
“Yeah, on a whole, it’s, for the one day groups, it’s been a reasonably tough tour. Coming to these places with a reasonably inexperienced side always provides you with different challenges, different experiences. So, yeah really keen to finish off with a win and everyone can go home.”
Renshaw Reaps The Rewards
Player of the Match Matt Renshaw credited his success to backing his natural game.
“I think it was just understanding the way that I wanted to play and trust that and hopefully get the rewards today.”
Renshaw acknowledged how quickly T20 matches can swing.
“Yeah, I think it’s just one of those things with T20, we obviously got a good score. They came out pretty well and pretty hard, and sort of the way that we played made them be able to do what they did at the start.”
Discussing his partnership during Australia’s innings, he said:
“Yeah, definitely. I think he’s obviously got his strengths, I’ve got mine, sort of using the strengths at the same time and trying to just do that for as long as we could.”
When asked whether Australia’s total felt enough at the innings break, Renshaw admitted there were nerves.
“Yeah, obviously after the first game you think that and then they come out and score 65 in four overs. So it’s a bit nervous after that, but it felt like with our innings, the longer we batted, the harder it got to hit the ball and hit the ball hard.”
Bangladesh Looking For Improvements
Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy praised parts of his side’s performance but admitted improvements are needed.
“Yep, we played really good cricket, but a couple of areas we need to improve.”
Asked where his team must improve, Hridoy replied:
“We need to carry a little bit more for the team.”
Reflecting on the loss of key wickets after strong starts, he said:
“That’s what we are talking about actually, whenever they get set, we need to dig a bigger innings here.”
Despite his own fighting knock, Hridoy remained focused on the bigger picture.
“So far so good, but we have to chase this kind of match, otherwise we cannot.”
“Yeah, we will work on it for the final game.”
Australia Seal Series With One Match Remaining
Bangladesh’s aggressive approach nearly produced a memorable chase, but Australia’s experience proved decisive when the pressure peaked.
The visitors absorbed the early storm, struck at crucial moments, and executed their plans superbly in the closing overs. With the win, Australia take a 2-0 lead in the series and will now head into the final match seeking a clean sweep.
