Bangladesh will look to seize an uncommon opportunity when they face a depleted Australian side in a three-match One-Day International series that begins in Dhaka on Tuesday. With several senior Australian stars unavailable, the hosts believe they have a genuine chance to improve their historically poor record against one of world cricket’s most dominant teams.
Bangladesh have managed just one victory in 22 ODIs against Australia, a statistic that highlights the challenge ahead. Still, confidence is growing within the home camp after a string of encouraging series performances.
Bangladesh Senses An Opportunity
Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz believes the timing could be right for his team to make a statement.
Speaking ahead of the opening ODI in Mirpur, Mehidy pointed to Bangladesh’s recent form as a source of optimism. The Tigers enter the series after securing consecutive series victories over the West Indies, Pakistan, and New Zealand, giving them valuable momentum.
The skipper also highlighted the importance of home conditions but cautioned against assumptions that the Mirpur surface would automatically favor bowlers or make batting unusually difficult.
With Australia missing several established names, Bangladesh sees a rare opening to challenge a traditional powerhouse.
Australia Arrive Without Key Players
Australia’s preparations have been affected by the absence of several high-profile players.
Captain Mitchell Marsh and star batter Travis Head are unavailable for the ODI series, while leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has also been ruled out through injury.
In Marsh’s absence, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will lead the side. Australia head into the Bangladesh tour looking to rebound after suffering a 2-1 ODI series defeat against Pakistan earlier this month.
Despite the setbacks, Inglis believes the tour presents an important chance to evaluate squad depth and experiment with combinations ahead of future international tournaments, including the next World Cup.
Young Australians Get Their Chance
Australia’s stand-in captain said younger members of the squad would benefit significantly from exposure to subcontinent conditions.
Having recently played in the Indian Premier League, Inglis noted that the team would wait until closer to the toss before making final assessments of the pitch. He also suggested recent matches in Bangladesh indicate seam bowlers may receive more assistance than many visiting teams traditionally expect.
The series could provide valuable experience for emerging Australian players adapting to unfamiliar conditions and increased responsibility.
Rishad Hossain Seen As Key Threat
One player attracting attention from both camps is Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain.
Both captains identified Rishad as someone capable of influencing the outcome of the series. Inglis acknowledged that several Australian players have already faced him through the Big Bash League and said preparations would include specific plans for handling the spinner’s threat.
Bangladesh will hope Rishad can use local knowledge and favorable conditions to trouble an inexperienced Australian batting lineup.
Injury Forces Further Australia Changes
Cricket Australia confirmed additional squad adjustments ahead of the series.
Marsh remains sidelined while recovering from an ankle injury, while Head has been granted personal leave. Sangha’s participation ended after he suffered a hamstring injury during the second ODI against Pakistan.
National selector Tony Dodemaide confirmed Sangha would play no further part in the tour. He also explained that Australia had hoped Marsh would be fit enough for the Bangladesh ODIs but that the captain had not yet fully recovered.
Head, originally selected for both the ODI and T20I segments of the tour, was later granted leave covering the entire trip.
New Faces Added To Squad
The absences have created opportunities for other players.
Teenage batter Ollie Peake and all-rounder Matt Short, who had initially been expected to return home following the Pakistan series, will now remain with the squad.
Meanwhile, off-spinner Todd Murphy has been called up as cover for Sangha. Murphy has already featured in seven Test matches for Australia but is still waiting to make his limited-overs international debut.
ODI Series Schedule
The three-match ODI series will be played on June 9, June 11, and June 14 in Dhaka. Following the conclusion of the 50-over contests, Bangladesh and Australia will meet again in a three-match Twenty20 International series.
For Bangladesh, the series represents a chance to capitalize on favorable circumstances. For Australia, it offers an opportunity to test emerging talent while navigating the absence of several established stars.
