Alleged Irish Cartel Boss Arrested In Dubai After Years-Long Global Hunt

A man long accused of standing at the center of one of Europe’s most powerful crime networks has been arrested in Dubai after authorities spent years tracking his movements across multiple countries.

Daniel Kinahan, 48, was detained Wednesday in what officials described as a covert operation involving Irish and United Arab Emirates authorities. Investigators allege he led the Kinahan cartel, a group blamed for major influence over Europe’s cocaine pipeline and linked to violent gang feuds stretching back more than a decade.

Secret Operation Ends Long Pursuit

Dubai police did not publicly identify Kinahan by name at first. Instead, officials said they had “arrested an Irish fugitive for his alleged role in an organised criminal group involved in international crimes in his home country.”

Irish media outlets later identified the suspect as Kinahan on Friday.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s national police force, An Garda Síochána, confirmed that an Irish man in his 40s had been arrested under a warrant issued by Irish courts.

“An Garda Síochána has been steadfast in our determination that we would pursue those allegedly involved in serious Organized Criminal activity, wherever they go,” police said in a statement. “Today’s arrest is another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement co-operation in tackling transnational organized crime.”

Deadly Gang Feud Left 18 People Dead

Kinahan is expected to face charges in Ireland tied to the bitter feud between the Kinahan cartel and the rival Hutch gang.

That conflict has torn through Ireland’s criminal underworld since 2015 and reportedly left 18 people dead. The violence shocked the public and pushed authorities to intensify efforts against organized crime figures operating abroad.

Flight From Ireland To Spain, Then Dubai

Investigators say Kinahan first fled Ireland for Spain before later relocating to the UAE.

His departure followed a brazen assassination attempt at Dublin’s Regency Hotel during a boxing weigh-in. The intended target was believed to be Kinahan, though associate David Byrne was killed in the attack.

The hotel shooting became one of the most notorious gangland incidents in recent Irish history.

$5 Million Reward Offered By US Treasury

Pressure on the alleged cartel boss escalated sharply in 2022 when the U.S. Treasury Department announced a reward of $5 million for information leading to the arrest of the Kinahan cartel’s leaders or the organization’s “financial destruction.”

That move signaled how seriously international agencies viewed the group’s reach and financial power.

Cartel Accused Of Dominating Cocaine Trade

Authorities have described the Kinahan cartel as a heavyweight force in the European narcotics market.

The organization, alongside other crime groups across the continent, has allegedly formed a “super cartel” controlling roughly one-third of Europe’s cocaine trade.

Still, the arrest marks one of the most significant blows yet against the network.

Ties To The Boxing World

Beyond criminal allegations, Kinahan also built a public profile in professional boxing.

He was the founder of management company MTK Global and maintained connections within the sport for years, creating a controversial overlap between boxing business circles and organized crime allegations.

What Comes Next

Irish authorities are now expected to seek Kinahan’s return to face proceedings tied to organized crime accusations and the long-running gang feud.

For investigators who chased him across borders for years, the arrest may be only the beginning.
