A late-night television controversy has erupted into a major media storm after Disney confirmed that ABC’s long-running program “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will no longer air for the foreseeable future. The decision follows intense backlash over remarks host Jimmy Kimmel made about the suspect accused of assassinating political activist Charlie Kirk.
The move comes amid mounting pressure from broadcasters, federal regulators, and political figures who argue Kimmel’s comments crossed a line during a deeply tense moment in the nation’s political climate.
Disney Confirms Show Will Be Pulled Indefinitely
Disney confirmed that ABC’s flagship late-night show will not air moving forward, at least for now.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live will be preempted indefinitely,” a Disney spokesperson said.
The announcement followed a decision by Nexstar Media Group, which owns hundreds of television stations across the United States, to stop airing the program on its ABC affiliates beginning Wednesday night.
The company said it would replace the show with other programming after controversy erupted surrounding Kimmel’s remarks about Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.
Broadcasters Say Comments Crossed A Line

Nexstar leadership sharply criticized Kimmel’s remarks and explained why they decided to remove the show from their stations.
“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views or values of the local communities in which we are located,” Nexstar’s broadcasting chief, Andrew Alford, said in a press release.
The company said continuing to broadcast the program would not serve viewers in the communities it represents.
“Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue.”
The broadcaster added that the suspension was meant to calm tensions while the national conversation surrounding the assassination unfolds.
Kimmel’s Remarks Ignite Political Backlash
The controversy stems from comments Kimmel made on his show earlier this week, where he criticized conservatives for linking the suspect’s ideology to the political left.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.
Those remarks quickly spread online and triggered fierce reaction across political and media circles.
Meanwhile, federal authorities and local officials had already begun outlining their own understanding of the suspect’s political views.
FCC Chairman Warns Of Possible Action

The fallout soon escalated beyond media criticism when Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr weighed in publicly.
Speaking during an interview with commentator Benny Johnson, Carr blasted Kimmel’s remarks and suggested federal regulators could examine the issue further.
“In some quarters, there’s a very concerted effort to try to lie to the American people about the nature … of one of the most significant newsworthy public interest acts that we’ve seen in a long time in what appears to be an action by Jimmy Kimmel to play into that narrative that this was somehow a MAGA or a Republican-motivated person,” Carr told host Benny Johnson.
Carr also emphasized that broadcast networks operate under licenses issued by the federal government, which require them to serve the public interest.
“And I’ve been very clear from the moment that I have become chairman of the FCC, I want to reinvigorate the public interest. And what people don’t understand is that the broadcasters, and you’ve gotten this right, are entirely different than people that use other forms of communication. They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest.
“Look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or, you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead,” Carr added.
Later, Carr praised local television affiliates for stepping away from the show.
“Broadcasters are different than any other form of communication,” Carr said.
Debate Over Late-Night Shows Intensifies

Carr argued that modern late-night programs have drifted away from traditional comedy and toward overt political messaging.
“They went from going for applause, from laugh lines to applause lines. They went from being court jesters that would make fun of everybody in power to being court clerics and enforcing a very narrow political ideology,” Carr asserted.
The remarks reflect a broader debate about the role of entertainment platforms in political discourse.
Details About The Suspect Continue To Emerge
Authorities say Tyler Robinson, 22, faces murder charges following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Investigators have stated that Robinson held a “leftist ideology” and had become increasingly radicalized in recent years. Officials also disclosed that Robinson was involved in a romantic relationship with a transgender partner who was biologically male and transitioning to female.
Meanwhile, the political debate surrounding the tragedy intensified when Vice President JD Vance commented on the issue during an appearance as guest host of “The Charlie Kirk Show.”
Kimmel responded on his program by criticizing Vance’s remarks.
On Tuesday, he mocked the vice president for “pointing his little mascara-stained finger directly at the left.”
Vance had argued during the show that most political extremists in the United States come from the far left.
Kimmel dismissed the claim in blunt terms.
“And by ‘statistical fact,’ he means complete bull—,” Kimmel reacted.
As the controversy continues to unfold, Disney’s decision to remove the show from the air signals how quickly a late-night segment can escalate into a national media crisis.
The long-term future of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” remains uncertain as pressure from regulators, broadcasters, and political leaders continues to mount.
