Chargers’ Quentin Johnston Suffers Concussion After Crushing Hit In Preseason Clash

A tense moment unfolded on Saturday as the Los Angeles Chargers took on the Los Angeles Rams in a preseason matchup that quickly turned concerning for fans and teammates alike. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston was forced to exit the game early after taking a heavy hit that left him down on the field.

Brutal Collision Ends Early Drive

The incident came fast and hard. On just the third snap of the Chargers’ opening series, Johnston sprinted down the sideline, eyes locked on a deep pass from Justin Herbert. But before he could make a play on the ball, Rams safety Tanner Ingle delivered a powerful hit that stopped everything cold.

Johnston hit the turf on his back, arms stretched out, and for a few tense moments, he didn’t move. The stadium atmosphere shifted instantly as medical staff rushed onto the field.

Medical Response And Immediate Concern

Trainers quickly surrounded Johnston, assessing the situation as players from both teams looked on. After those initial moments of stillness, he was eventually helped and later taken off the field for further evaluation.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh later addressed the situation, offering a mix of concern and cautious relief.

“Quentin suffered a concussion, and that’s never a good thing,” Harbaugh said. “But the way it looked there at the time, looked like it could have a been a lot worse. And he was taken (to a hospital) for more evaluation, but he was talking. He remembered the play. He was moving good. So in that way, it’s a good thing.”

Rising Expectations In Third Season

For Johnston, the timing couldn’t be worse. Entering his third NFL season, the former TCU standout has been pushing to solidify his role in the Chargers’ offense.

Drafted No. 21 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Johnston showed real progress last season. In 2024, he posted 55 receptions for 711 yards and eight touchdowns, marking the strongest campaign of his young career.

Meanwhile, competition within the receiving group remains tight. Johnston has been battling for a starting role alongside established and emerging targets like Keenan Allen, Tre Harris, and Ladd McConkey.

What Comes Next For The Chargers

Injuries during preseason always raise difficult questions. While the team avoided what initially looked like a potentially more serious outcome, a concussion still places Johnston’s short-term availability in doubt.

That said, early signs offered some reassurance. According to Harbaugh, Johnston remained alert, responsive, and physically stable following the hit, a small but important positive in an otherwise worrying moment.

As the Chargers continue their preseason preparations, all eyes will now turn to Johnston’s recovery timeline and whether he can return in time to compete for a key offensive role.
