The Las Vegas Raiders are making a bold move at quarterback, and it is turning heads across the league. Just as speculation builds around the No. 1 overall pick, the franchise has added a proven veteran to the mix, creating intrigue ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.
The timing is no coincidence. While all signs point toward a future star, the Raiders appear focused on balancing immediate stability with long-term upside.
Raiders Add Veteran Stability At Quarterback

The Raiders agreed to a contract with Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins on Thursday, his agent announced. The terms of the contract are not yet known.
That move gives Las Vegas a steady, experienced presence under center. Meanwhile, it also raises an obvious question, what does this mean for their top draft pick?
Cousins, 37, signed a four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons two seasons ago that could have been worth up to $180 million, but was released two seasons after signing it.
However, despite his release, Cousins still brings a wealth of experience and production. His resume speaks for itself, and the Raiders clearly see value in that.
A Roller-Coaster Run In Atlanta

Cousins’ stint with the Falcons came with highs and lows. While expectations were high, injuries and inconsistency shaped much of his tenure.
Cousins was benched in Week 15 in 2024, the first year of the deal, for rookie Michael Penix Jr. after the four-time Pro Bowler struggled down the stretch as he battled through injury.
Still, the veteran showed resilience. Cousins started eight games last season, including the final seven after Penix tore his ACL, and the team had a 5-3 record in his starts, including winning the last four.
In 10 games and eight starts last season, Cousins completed 61.7% of his passes for 1,721 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Those numbers, while not eye-popping, reflect a quarterback capable of managing games and delivering when needed.
A Career Built On Consistency
Even late in his career, Cousins remains among the more productive quarterbacks of his era.
The veteran quarterback has the 19th-most regular-season passing yards (44,700) and 15th-most passing touchdowns (298) in NFL history.
That kind of track record matters. Especially for a Raiders team looking to regain structure after a turbulent stretch.
Familiar Faces And Fresh Opportunities

There is also a key connection behind this move.
Cousins also has familiarity with new Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak. During Cousins’ time with the Minnesota Vikings, Kubiak was his quarterbacks coach for two seasons and his offensive coordinator for another.
That familiarity could smooth the transition. In contrast to learning a completely new system, Cousins steps into an environment where he already understands the play-caller.
What This Means For The No. 1 Pick
All eyes now shift to the draft, where the Raiders are expected to make a franchise-defining decision.
The Raiders traded Geno Smith to the New York Jets after one dismal season and were expected to add another veteran quarterback despite having the top selection in the NFL Draft, which they are likely to use on Mendoza.
However, the presence of Cousins changes the timeline.
Raiders minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek have said numerous times that they believe in not playing a young quarterback right away, making it no sure thing that Mendoza would start Week 1.
That approach suggests patience. Rather than rushing Mendoza into the spotlight, the Raiders may allow him to develop behind a seasoned veteran.
A Bridge To The Future
If Las Vegas does select Fernando Mendoza, the plan appears clear.
The team brass, if they do indeed select Mendoza with the top pick, might prefer to start Cousins while Mendoza develops behind the scenes to begin the season.
It is a strategy that has worked before across the league. Let the rookie learn, adjust, and grow without immediate pressure.
Still, one question lingers. How long will that transition last?
For now, the Raiders have positioned themselves with options. A veteran ready to lead today, and a potential star waiting for tomorrow.
