The Raiders agreed to a contract with Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins on Thursday, his agent announced. The terms of the contract are not yet known.

That move gives Las Vegas a steady, experienced presence under center. Meanwhile, it also raises an obvious question, what does this mean for their top draft pick?

Cousins, 37, signed a four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons two seasons ago that could have been worth up to $180 million, but was released two seasons after signing it.

However, despite his release, Cousins still brings a wealth of experience and production. His resume speaks for itself, and the Raiders clearly see value in that.

A Roller-Coaster Run In Atlanta

Cousins’ stint with the Falcons came with highs and lows. While expectations were high, injuries and inconsistency shaped much of his tenure.

Cousins was benched in Week 15 in 2024, the first year of the deal, for rookie Michael Penix Jr. after the four-time Pro Bowler struggled down the stretch as he battled through injury.

Still, the veteran showed resilience. Cousins started eight games last season, including the final seven after Penix tore his ACL, and the team had a 5-3 record in his starts, including winning the last four.

In 10 games and eight starts last season, Cousins completed 61.7% of his passes for 1,721 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Those numbers, while not eye-popping, reflect a quarterback capable of managing games and delivering when needed.

Even late in his career, Cousins remains among the more productive quarterbacks of his era.

The veteran quarterback has the 19th-most regular-season passing yards (44,700) and 15th-most passing touchdowns (298) in NFL history.

Raiders minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek have said numerous times that they believe in not playing a young quarterback right away, making it no sure thing that Mendoza would start Week 1.

That approach suggests patience. Rather than rushing Mendoza into the spotlight, the Raiders may allow him to develop behind a seasoned veteran.
