Baby Delivered After Mother’s Fatal Shooting Outside San Diego Rental Dies

A newborn girl delivered after her pregnant mother was fatally shot outside a vacation rental in San Diego has died after spending more than a week in critical condition, authorities and family members confirmed Sunday.

The infant had been fighting for her life since doctors performed an emergency cesarean section following the deadly May 30 shooting that claimed the life of 17-year-old Jariah Edwards.

According to investigators, the baby’s condition never improved after suffering severe complications linked to oxygen deprivation.

Newborn Succumbs To Injuries

The infant remained hospitalized in critical condition from the moment she was delivered. Authorities said she suffered a severe hypoxic brain injury and ultimately died after being taken off life support.

In a statement, police recognized the efforts of medical personnel who worked to save the child.

“The San Diego Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the neonatal intensive care unit staff at Rady Children’s Hospital for the care they provided and their extraordinary efforts to save her life,” the agency said.

The baby’s death adds another heartbreaking chapter to a case that has already shocked the San Diego community.

Teen Mother Was 32 Weeks Pregnant

Edwards was 32 weeks pregnant when she was shot outside a rental property on Gardena Avenue in the Bay Park neighborhood.

Investigators said the teenager suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the early morning attack. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors attempted to save both her and her unborn child.

Despite emergency medical efforts, Edwards later died from her injuries.

Meanwhile, doctors delivered the baby through an emergency cesarean section in hopes of preserving her life.

Ex-Boyfriend Faces Murder Charges

Police arrested Edwards’ former boyfriend, 21-year-old Trevon Williams, just hours after the shooting. Authorities said he fled into nearby Tecolote Canyon before being taken into custody.

Last week, prosecutors formally charged Williams with murder, attempted murder of a fetus, and possession of a machine gun with an extended magazine.

Court records show Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors Detail Alleged Plan

According to prosecutors, Williams traveled from Arizona to San Diego using a Lyft ride after learning where Edwards was staying.

Authorities allege he used DoorDash orders sent to the rental property as a way to draw Edwards outside before the shooting occurred.

Prosecutors further claim Williams later admitted to the killing during a phone conversation with a friend.

The allegations have become a central part of the prosecution’s case as investigators continue to examine the events leading up to the fatal encounter.

Additional Charges Could Follow

With the baby’s death now confirmed, prosecutors may seek an additional murder charge against Williams.

Officials previously stated that the infant had shown minimal brain activity after suffering significant oxygen loss connected to the shooting.

If convicted on the charges currently filed, Williams could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

The case remains under investigation as authorities evaluate the legal implications stemming from the newborn’s death.
