Chikungunya Virus Outbreak Triggers CDC Travel Alert For Popular Destination

Health officials have issued a new warning for travelers after a chikungunya virus outbreak was reported in a well-known South American vacation destination. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has raised concerns about the spread of the mosquito-borne illness and is urging visitors to take extra precautions.

The advisory comes as Bolivia faces growing cases of the virus, particularly in two major regions. Travelers heading to the country are now being advised to stay alert and take steps to reduce their risk of infection.

CDC Issues Level 2 Travel Alert For Bolivia

The CDC issued a Level 2 travel notice for Bolivia on Feb. 10 following reports of a chikungunya outbreak in specific areas of the country.

“There is an outbreak of chikungunya in Santa Cruz and Cochabamba Departments, Bolivia,” the alert read.

Under a Level 2 advisory, travelers are encouraged to practice enhanced precautions while visiting the affected regions.

Health officials say mosquito exposure is the primary concern because the virus spreads through bites from infected mosquitoes.

Symptoms Of Chikungunya Virus

According to the CDC, symptoms typically appear within three to seven days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito.

The most common symptoms include fever and joint pain. However, other symptoms can also appear, including headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling, and skin rash.

Most people recover from the illness within about a week.

Still, health officials warn that some patients experience lingering complications after the initial infection.

“Some [people] can have severe joint pain for months to years following acute illness,” the CDC’s site says.

Despite the discomfort caused by the virus, severe outcomes are uncommon.

“Death from chikungunya is rare.”

How Travelers Can Protect Themselves

The CDC recommends several precautions for travelers visiting regions affected by the outbreak.

Health experts advise people to get the chikungunya vaccine before traveling when available. They also encourage visitors to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes.

“You can protect yourself by preventing mosquito bites.”

Travelers are advised to “use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and stay in places with air conditioning or that have screens on the windows and doors.”

Taking these steps can significantly reduce the chances of infection.

Other Regions Facing Similar Advisories

Bolivia is not the only place facing warnings related to the virus.

The CDC recently issued a Level 2 advisory for chikungunya in the Seychelles, a group of islands located in the Indian Ocean.

In addition, similar Level 2 travel advisories were issued in December for several other destinations. Those locations include Cuba, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Guangdong Province in southern China.

In each case, the CDC advised Americans to “practice enhanced precautions” while visiting the affected areas.

Additional Health Advisory In Bolivia

Bolivia is also currently under a separate health alert related to measles.

The CDC issued a Level 1 advisory for measles in the country last year, citing a rise in cases across multiple countries.

“Measles cases are rising in many countries around the world,” the alert noted.

Although the two health warnings involve different diseases, both advisories highlight the importance of vaccination and preventive measures for travelers.

For those planning trips abroad, health experts say staying informed about outbreaks and taking recommended precautions can help reduce risks.
