Just days before his call-up, he was sent down during spring training after hitting .171. Instead of letting it derail him, he reset mentally and adjusted his approach.
“He just went right down and hit his stride and was able to reset in a couple of days,” Kelly said. “Which again, for anybody, is really impressive, especially for a 19-year-old kid whose hopes and dreams were to make the big leagues.”
That resilience paid off quickly. Within a week, he earned the call that changed everything.
The next 24 hours were a whirlwind. Travel, logistics, and a rush to get family and friends to Pittsburgh added to the chaos. Yet, Griffin embraced every second.

“Darren is the reason I’m here,” Griffin said. “He believed in me and took a chance on me. That’s pretty special right there, and I’m going to cherish that a long time.”
