Rueben Bain Jr., widely projected as a top-10 pick, was behind the wheel during a March 2024 crash that left one passenger critically injured. Months later, that passenger died, according to official records.
Crash Details Emerge As Draft Nears
The incident, which had not previously been widely reported, occurred in the early hours of March 17, 2024, along Interstate 95 in South Florida. According to a crash report and court records, Bain Jr. struck another vehicle from behind shortly after 4 a.m.
The impact triggered a violent chain reaction. His vehicle, a 2021 Land Rover tied to a corporate entity, slammed into a concrete wall, then shot across multiple lanes before crashing again on the opposite side of the highway.
Authorities responded quickly. However, what they found painted a troubling scene.
Passenger Injuries Turn Fatal Months Later
Among those in the vehicle was 22-year-old Destiny Betts, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was found incapacitated at the scene and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center.
According to records and a family-organized fundraiser, Betts never regained consciousness. Tragically, she was pronounced dead three months later, on June 13, 2024. The crash report does not list an official cause of death.
Her family later issued a statement, declining further public discussion while expressing both grief and restraint:
“As her family, we remain deeply committed to honoring her memory in a meaningful and appropriate way. Destiny’s passing was the result of a tragic accident that occurred several years ago. While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career. Thank you for respecting our wishes during this difficult matter.”
No Impairment Found, Charges Dismissed
Despite the severity of the crash, investigators reported no signs of impairment. Bain Jr. was not suspected of alcohol or drug use, and no tests were administered at the scene.
He was cited for operating a vehicle in a “careless or negligent manner.” However, that charge did not stick. Court records show it was later dismissed due to a “defective citation” after he entered a not guilty plea.

The vehicle carried multiple passengers that night, including fellow football players Nyjalik Kelly and Wesley Bissainthe, along with another passenger, LaDreama Roberts.
