A rising star on the brink of hearing his name called early in the NFL Draft is now facing renewed scrutiny after details of a fatal crash resurfaced, casting a shadow over what should have been a defining career moment.
Rueben Bain Jr., widely projected as a top-10 pick, was behind the wheel during a March 2024 crash that left one passenger critically injured. Months later, that passenger died, according to official records.
Crash Details Emerge As Draft Nears

The incident, which had not previously been widely reported, occurred in the early hours of March 17, 2024, along Interstate 95 in South Florida. According to a crash report and court records, Bain Jr. struck another vehicle from behind shortly after 4 a.m.
The impact triggered a violent chain reaction. His vehicle, a 2021 Land Rover tied to a corporate entity, slammed into a concrete wall, then shot across multiple lanes before crashing again on the opposite side of the highway.
Authorities responded quickly. However, what they found painted a troubling scene.
Passenger Injuries Turn Fatal Months Later
Among those in the vehicle was 22-year-old Destiny Betts, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was found incapacitated at the scene and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center.
According to records and a family-organized fundraiser, Betts never regained consciousness. Tragically, she was pronounced dead three months later, on June 13, 2024. The crash report does not list an official cause of death.
Her family later issued a statement, declining further public discussion while expressing both grief and restraint:
“As her family, we remain deeply committed to honoring her memory in a meaningful and appropriate way. Destiny’s passing was the result of a tragic accident that occurred several years ago. While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career. Thank you for respecting our wishes during this difficult matter.”
No Impairment Found, Charges Dismissed

Despite the severity of the crash, investigators reported no signs of impairment. Bain Jr. was not suspected of alcohol or drug use, and no tests were administered at the scene.
He was cited for operating a vehicle in a “careless or negligent manner.” However, that charge did not stick. Court records show it was later dismissed due to a “defective citation” after he entered a not guilty plea.
Meanwhile, the legal outcome raises questions. Does a dismissed charge erase concern, or does it simply shift attention elsewhere?
NFL Teams Aware But Staying Quiet
As the draft approaches, teams are fully aware of the situation. Multiple organizations acknowledged knowledge of the crash, though none offered clarity on how it might influence their decisions.
That silence speaks volumes.
While talent often drives draft boards, off-field concerns can quietly shape outcomes. In Bain Jr.’s case, teams appear to be weighing both.
Additional Citation Adds Context

The 2024 crash is not the only incident tied to Bain Jr.’s driving record. In October 2025, he received another citation while driving a Tesla Cybertruck, again for careless driving.
That case followed a familiar path. It was also dismissed, again due to a “defective citation.”
Still, the pattern may not go unnoticed by decision-makers evaluating risk alongside performance.
Others Involved In The Crash
The vehicle carried multiple passengers that night, including fellow football players Nyjalik Kelly and Wesley Bissainthe, along with another passenger, LaDreama Roberts.
All were reported to have possible injuries. However, only one individual required hospital treatment immediately following the crash.
Efforts to reach those involved have not produced public responses.
Strong Performance Keeps Draft Stock Steady
On the field, Bain Jr. continued to shine. He wrapped up his college career as one of the most dominant defensive players, helping guide his team to a College Football Playoff title game appearance.
That performance has kept his draft stock firmly in the spotlight.
So, what matters more to teams right now, elite production or unresolved questions?
Unanswered Questions Remain
Attempts to obtain comments from multiple parties, including Bain Jr., his university, and law enforcement agencies, have gone unanswered so far.
With the NFL Draft just days away, the timing of these revelations adds pressure and intrigue to an already high-stakes process.
Teams now face a familiar dilemma. Do they prioritize talent, or do they dig deeper into the full story behind it?
