Russian troops fighting in Ukraine have reportedly lost a critical communications tool after Starlink internet terminals used by their forces were abruptly shut down, triggering disruptions across multiple front-line operations.
Ukrainian officials say the move came after coordination with SpaceX, the satellite internet company run by Elon Musk. The shutdown appears to have hit Russian battlefield communications hard, forcing some units to halt assaults while scrambling for alternatives.
Ukraine Moves To Block Unauthorized Starlink Use
Officials in Kyiv say Russian troops had been using unauthorized Starlink terminals since the early stages of the 2022 invasion. Those devices provided secure communications and helped coordinate drone missions across the battlefield.
However, Ukrainian authorities recently discovered Starlink terminals attached to Russian long-range drones. That discovery prompted urgent discussions with SpaceX to shut down the systems.
To solve the problem, Ukraine worked with the company to create a controlled access system.
“Starlinks included in the ‘white list’ are working — Russian terminals have already been blocked,” Ukrainian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov said in a Telegram post, adding that the list was still being updated, Reuters reported.
The so-called whitelist ensures that only approved Ukrainian Starlink terminals continue to operate, while others lose connectivity.
Russian Units Report Communications Collapse

Reports from the battlefield suggest the impact was immediate.
Ukrainian military sources told Reuters that Russian units began experiencing major communications problems shortly after the shutdown took effect. Some troops reportedly struggled to coordinate movements, while others attempted to switch to Russian satellite systems.
Meanwhile, Russian war bloggers also acknowledged the disruption.
The pro-Russian Telegram channel Two Majors said there had been a major failure of Starlink terminals on the Russian side beginning Wednesday evening. The group described the block as “extremely unpleasant,” according to the East2West news agency.
According to Ukrainian sources near the front line, the loss of satellite connectivity quickly affected command structures.
“All command of the troops has collapsed. Assault operations have been stopped in many areas,” Ukrainian defense adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram, Reuters reported.
Starlink Plays Key Role In Modern Warfare
Starlink has become one of the most important communication tools in the war.
Ukraine’s military uses tens of thousands of Starlink terminals to maintain internet connectivity across the battlefield. These portable satellite units allow soldiers to coordinate troop movements, control drones and maintain secure communications even when traditional infrastructure is damaged.
However, the same technology has also appeared in Russian hands.
Ukrainian officials said they had recently discovered the satellite terminals mounted on Russian long-range drones. That discovery raised alarms that the technology was helping Moscow improve targeting and battlefield coordination.
Russian Forces Search For Alternatives

With the Starlink access now restricted, Russian forces are reportedly attempting to switch to domestic satellite systems.
However, analysts say Russia currently lacks a comparable satellite internet network capable of matching Starlink’s speed, coverage and reliability.
Some Russian attacks have already slowed or stopped, according to battlefield reports. Other operations continue, but at reduced coordination levels as troops struggle to maintain communication between units.
The disruption also appears to have affected drone operations. Ukrainian sources said Russian forces can no longer attach Starlink terminals to drones for targeting and command links.
Satellite Launch Signals Russia’s Response
At the same time, Russia is continuing efforts to expand its own space capabilities.
Reports indicate the country launched a new spy satellite aboard a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome amid the communications disruption.
Whether that move will help Moscow replace lost battlefield connectivity remains unclear.
Peace Talks Continue Amid Battlefield Shifts

The Starlink shutdown comes at a sensitive moment in the war.
Diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict are continuing through negotiations involving the United States, Ukraine and Russia.
American officials have said the United States will continue supplying weapons to Ukraine until a peace agreement is reached.
For now, however, the sudden loss of Starlink access appears to have delivered a significant setback to Russian battlefield communications.
